BRIDGE NETWORK - PhD student

Steven Karera is a statistician by training, with a master’s degree in Data Science, and currently pursuing a PhD in Biostatistics.

His academic and professional journey have shaped his focus on applying statistical methods and data analysis to address healthcare challenges.

He is driven by a commitment to using data to inform public health strategies and improve health outcomes.

His experience includes working on clinical and public health research, focusing on statistical modeling, machine learning, and graph algorithms.

He has supported national health programs, primarily through a collaboration between the Ministry of Health/RBC and the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. In this role, He contributed to data integration and analysis efforts and developed scripts for data cleaning, de-identification, and de-duplication to prepare HIV analytic datasets.

These datasets are used by surveillance teams to inform HIV recency surveillance and guide programmatic decisions.
